Ultrasonic testing is an ultrasonic inspection of materials for the purpose of detecting defects such as discontinuities of materials.

The main objective of ultrasonic testing is detection of defects, measurement of their parameters, assessment of their hazard and assessment of feasibility of operation of the particular tested object (tested item).

The principle of inspection by ultrasonic echo-pulse method is based on the fact that the ultrasonic transducer sends short ultrasonic pulses to the tested item. When encountering a barrier, for example, a defect or a back surface (bottom), part of energy of the ultrasonic wave reflects and returns back to the UT transducer. The receiver of ultrasonic vibrations converts ultrasonic oscillations reflected from a barrier into electrical oscillations which get to the main indicator of the defectoscope. The defectoscope detects intensity and arrival time of echoes reflected from defects, what allows to determine dimensions of the defect and its location coordinates.
